California Art League (CAL) is founded on the belief that when individual artists join together in creating their destinies, their growth and impact is multiplied in their lives and throughout the world. With visual art exhibitions, ongoing education and creative interaction, we empower artists to fulfill their highest potential.
CAL provides a variety of activities and educational programming to its members. Monthly membership meetings are held which feature exciting demonstrations or presentations by renowned artists and art professionals. Corresponding workshops may also be offered. There are also paint outs and field trips planned to local museums a few times a year. These events give members the opportunity to meet, socialize and interact with fellow artists.
General Membership Meetings:
Our general membership meetings are held monthly (9 times a year) on the third Tuesday of the month at the San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center in Tarzana. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. Members and guests are welcome. The address is 18312 Oxnard Street, Tarzana 91364. Our general membership meetings begin with a very short business meeting, followed by the presentation. Details on dates can be found in our most recent newsletter and/or the "UPCOMING EVENTS" box at the top right of this page.
Suggested donation at entrance is $5 for members, $8 for guests. Non members are welcome as guests.
CAL puts on four juried art exhibits each year. All exhibiting members are invited to participate. The exhibits alternate between two strikingly different venues. Two are three-month exhibits at the Blinn House in Pasadena. The other two are 3-week exhibits at the San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center in Tarzana.. Our juried exhibits have cash prizes, merchandise awards, and honorable mentions. Accepted works become available for sale and remain on exhibit at the Blinn House or the SFV Arts & Cultural Centerr for the duration of the exhibit.
CAL welcomes all levels of artists to join us whether you are a professional or a beginner. Painters, sculptors, photographers and collage artists are welcome. All genres, including abstract modern art, traditional realism, portraits, still life, landscape, cityscape, wildlife and everything in between are accepted.

I refined my artistic skills at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and at the Animation Guild under the tutelage of numerous painting, drawing and design masters, but I owe my greatest artistic debt to my years of study with my plein air, colorist mentor Elio Camacho, my impressionist mentor Vadim Zangninian, and my on-going study with master watercolorist Fealing Lin. I hold two masters degrees, am a retired City Manager and a former Army airborne/ranger/green beret having served with Special Forces in Viet Nam in 1970/71. I have two sons, Wyatt and Skyler, and am married to Debbie Kurita, also a retired City Manager. I like to emphasize design within harmonious color relationships and paint a wide variety of subjects including landscapes, cityscapes, still life, and figurative, but I only offer my very best work for sale. I believe that style is simply the way you paint and as my style evolves over time I anticipate an even greater emphasis on design and brushwork.
